A tuxedo is a black suit with satin or grosgrain lapels and a matching trouser stripe, worn for black-tie events. Bohorad's carries 8 black tuxedos from $140 to $499, sized by chest and length like a suit.

Shawl lapel or peak lapel: which tuxedo should I pick?

A shawl lapel is one rounded, unbroken curve, and five of our eight tuxedos use it, including two satin shawl lapel classic fit 2-button models. A peak lapel points up toward the shoulder and makes the chest look broader; we stock it in slim fit and regular fit wool. The notch lapel 1-button trim fit tuxedo looks closest to a business suit.

What does black tie actually require?

  • A black tuxedo with satin or grosgrain lapels and a matching trouser stripe
  • A plain white shirt and a black bow tie
  • A cummerbund or a waistcoat
  • No belt; wear men's suspenders if you want the trousers held up
  • Black leather shoes, such as our black whole cut oxford dress shoes

How do I size a tuxedo?

Tuxedo jackets are sized by chest and length: 40R means a 40-inch chest in Regular length. Short fits men under 5'8", Regular fits 5'8" to 6', and Long fits men over 6'. If you fall between two chest sizes, take the larger one, because sleeves and waist are easy to alter and the chest is not.

Slim fit has a higher armhole, narrower lapel and tapered leg; classic fit gives a fuller chest and a straight leg. Sleeve and waist alterations are done in store at 6 N Centre St, Pottsville, PA.

When should I order a tuxedo for an event?

Orders leave the shop in 1 to 2 business days, then spend 3 to 7 business days in transit with a tracking link by email. Allow at least 9 business days, plus time for any alterations, before the event.
